Expand/CollapseHISTORICAL NOTE

The U.S. Government Peace Commission, comprised of civilian and military leaders with experience in Indian affairs, traveled to Laramie, Wyoming to investigate the conditions of the Arapaho, Northern Cheyenne, Crow and the Brule, Oglala and Miniconjou Sioux. The purpose of their mission was to put a permanent end to Indian hostilities, restrict Indians to reservations and open up land for settlement. Treaties were signed with the various tribes in the spring of 1868. Alexander Gardner was the government photographer accompanying the commission to document the participants and the area in and around Fort Laramie.
