Expand/CollapseBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Rein O. Werner was born on September 3, 1913 in South St. Paul, Minnesota to Reinhold and Lillian Werner. Werner graduated from South St. Paul High School and studied photography at the Daguerre Memorial Institute in Lake Winona, Indiana in 1935.

After returning to South St. Paul, Werner opened his own studio, Werner Photo, which he ran from 1951 into the mid 1970's. Until his death in 1980, Werner continued his interest in photography, compiling historical photographs documenting the history of South St. Paul and taking contemporary photographs himself. Werner worked with the city to set up photograph displays at the local post office, city hall and various banks during the city's celebration of the U.S. Bicentennial.

Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The contents of this collection include photographs, negatives and transparencies made or compiled by Rein Werner documenting the history of South St. Paul from the 1880's to the late 1970's. The majority of the photographs in the collection were taken by other photographers and copied by Werner. Some of the photographs in the collection are duplicate views of black and white photographs that were likely hand-tinted by Werner. Subjects includes street scenes, buildings, residences, and parks in South St. Paul, as well as a small amount of photographs of the West St. Paul and greater Dakota County areas. The majority of the prints in this collection are matted and are likely from Werner's displays for the South St. Paul Bicentennial.

Image identification notes contain a comprehensive list of images held by Werner, arranged by subject and there under by number. Only the highlighted items from the lists are in the South St. Paul Photograph Collection.
