Roger Sherman Mackintosh was born in Massachusetts on February 18, 1872 and moved to
Minnesota with his family when he was eight years old. Mackintosh graduated from the
Minnesota College of Agriculture in 1902. He held academic appointments at the
Alabama Polytechnic Institute and Pennsylvania State College and received his
Master's degree from Iowa State College. Mackintosh returned to Minnesota as an
instructor of agriculture at the Caledonia High School. From 1913 to 1922 he was the
Extension Specialist in Horticulture for the University of Minnesota and then
Exhibit Specialist from 1922 until his retirement in 1940. Mackintosh was a longtime
member of the Minnesota State Horticultural Society as well as its president from
1918 to 1919 and its secretary from 1921 to 1943. He also spent time as editor of
the Minnesota Horticulturist. Mackintosh died on March 23, 1944.
