Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The City of Minneapolis documentary project idea was devised by Tim Strick while working as a job developer for the City of Minneapolis Employment and Training (CETA) offices program. He approached Minnesota Geographic Society's director Michael O'Neill, with whom he had worked on the publication Earth Journal to do a similar project as was being done in the city of Saint Paul. O'Neil agreed and Strick submitted a proposal to CETA and once it was accepted Strick signed on as the project director. The project included ten promising photographers with the task to document life in the city for a year. The photographers had weekly meetings in Minneapolis's West Bank where they turned in prints for the week and discussed upcoming plans. A goal of the program was to give the photographers as much exposure as possible, including two exhibits of the photographs at Forecast Gallery and the Hennepin County Government Center. Additionally, the Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper devoted an issue of their Sunday insert, Picture magazine to the project.

This note and the biographical information included were supplied by the project photographers.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Expand/CollapseRANDY CROCE

Biographical Information: Randy Croce was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1951. He lived in Leonia, New Jersey from 1961 to 1969; graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1973; and then moved to Saint Paul, Minnesota. Croce completed a Master of Arts in journalism at the University of Minnesota in 1995. He took photography classes at the Minnesota Museum of Art and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Croce was influenced by the Zone System techniques and aesthetics of Ansel Adams and Minor White and the social and visual approach of Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks, and Eugene Smith. He became a freelance photographer in 1976 shortly after he moved near the Minneapolis Native American Center. He got to know and photograph his Native American neighbors and then traveled to other Native American communities around the state. From 1976 to 1983 he lived and photographed with Blackfeet people in Montana and Alberta and produced his first documentary, The Drum Is the Heart.

In 1978 Croce joined the Minnesota Geographic Society Minneapolis documentary photography project team, visually exploring how people relate to one another and to the spaces where they live and work. He focused some of his project work on the city’s Native American community and on cooperatives, as he lived in a cooperative house and served on the board of Seward Co-op.

In 1983 Croce transitioned into video production with Clouded Land, a documentary about contested ownership on the White Earth Reservation, which was broadcast nationally on the Learning Channel and PBS. Since 1990, he has covered unions and workers’ issues as a video producer with the Labor Education Service at the University of Minnesota. Immigration has been one emphasis of his work there, including his documentary If Stone Could Speak about Italian immigrant stone cutters and a series of videos on contemporary immigrant rights. From 2009 to 2017 he worked with a team of researchers to produce a video and website, Who Built Our Capitol? documenting the workers who constructed the Minnesota State Capitol building.
