I.36.1Interview of Oscar Johnson on KMBC Radio, San Francisco, approximately 1960. 1 master audiotape reel (25 minutes); 7 inch, and 1 user audiocassette.
Interviewed by Evangeline Baker and co-host Clancy.
Subjects discussed: Johnson describes his youth in Minnesota skating on Lake Como. His first act was as Spike McDougal with Eddie Shipstad as Gahouse Anne in 1924. In 1926, he and Shipstad skated between hockey game periods at Madison Square Gardens. The first Minnesota Ice Follies was in 1933. From 1935-1939 the Follies visits various locales, including Chicago, Tulsa, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Philadelphia before making its home at Winterland in San Francisco. Statistically the Follies had drawn a total of 54 million people by the time of the interview, and was averaging 400 shows a year. Roy Shipstad joined the show in the Madison Square Garden days, and was known as a human top. He is compared to Dick Dwyer, the show's current star attraction. Other cast appearing in the 1943 Ice Follies film are mentioned.
