German cars are most certainly over-engineered. The reason why car brands like BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, and VW are over. As a BMW fan who has grown up around a BMW 502, 3.0 CSI, 635 and a bunch of other BMWs, I'm a fan of how they drive, just a great experience.
Over the years I have been doing more automotive repairs and quite enjoy it. Asking if these cars are over-engineered isn't meant to cause conflict. The cooling systems on most BMW's are the Achilles heel for these cars and have lead to engine damage or leaving drivers stranded.
I do most of my own maintenance too, but was left stranded years ago when the cheap plastic bleed screw on the hose coming from the water pump cracked. These five German cars are prime examples of what happens when engineering ambition overshadows reliability and ease of maintenance. German cars have long since had a reputation for being ahead of their time, packed with features and generally overengineered.
For decades, this was how they justified their lofty price tags, some building a reputation for having near bulletproof reliability and unheralded safety features. Over time, consumers discovered that overengineering in the technological age had a few serious drawbacks. The fact that automakers like BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, and VW are constantly pushing the boundaries of innovation is the reason why their vehicles are over.
"they're over-engineered, and they are on the cutting edge of technology. compare a camry and an audi a4/bmw 3/merc c class. all the german cars have more complicated drivetrains, more.
But, I agree that most new ones can be so over engineered that they are just too complicated. I remember the early cars having everything on them serviceable. You could change the little bulb in the hazard switch on that 1981 BMW 320, while you couldn't do that on any of the Japanese cars (of course, the Japanese used LED's, so they didn't burn.
Why is the overengineering of bmw vehicles so terr [BMW-Talk Forum] - Das BMW-Syndikat BMW Forum ist der zentrale Treffpunkt und die Anlaufstelle für alle BMW Fahrer und gleichzeitig umfassende Wissensplattform für alle BMW Modelle und BMW Tuning. Having owned a handful of (mostly older) BMWs, I'm convinced that German cars are very, very thoroughly engineered--meaning that some engineer sat down and thought out every little detail--but those same engineers also come to outright stupid conclusions on a regular basis and you end up with parts of the car that don't work well in the real world or over the long term.
