Various types of steering dampers are on the market, these range from fully electronic based on the bikes speed, to the more common piston or linear type (left) that mount onto the bottom of the triple clamp and the rotary type (right) that mounts on the top of the triple clamp. Whatever type of steering damper you use, they all perform the same job, add resistance or damping to the steering input.

sport bikes have a short wheelbase and an aggressive steering geometry to provide the ability to make very quick changes in direction. This has the harmful side-effect of making the bike less stable, more prone to feedback from uneven road surfaces, and more difficult to control. If the front wheel significantly deviates from the direction of travel when it touches down, it may cause an unwanted wobble. Steering dampers are factory installed on some high-end sport motorcycles and fitted to most contemporary racing bikes to counter these behaviours.
Steering dampers are also mounted to off-road motorcycles such as motocross bikes.

A steering stabilizer works in a way that's similar to your bike's front forks. Internal circuitry and hydraulic valving adjusts the amount of shock transferred through the bars to your arms. There is an attachment point to the frame and this sometimes violent motion is transferred to the frame, allowing you to maintain control of the motorcycle and even helping to reduce rider fatigue. So much like your front forks were designed to handle vertical impacts, a steering stabilizer is designed to reduce lateral movement. Hydraulic fluid passes between controlled chambers to dampen the forces of impact. Units are often called steering dampers as well as stabilizers.
