Definition of Seafood consumption This report analyses Australia's apparent per capita seafood consumption, including fish, crustaceans and molluscs. The data has been sourced from the Agricultural Outlook report, prepared jointly by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UN FAO).

The original data is measured. This figure includes imported seafood products which accounted for 62 per cent of consumption, down from 66 per cent in previous years. Our research used data from the Australian Health Survey to investigate the nutritional quality and sustainability of seafood consumption in Australia. We measured nutrition by the estimated contribution of 100g of a given seafood to the average requirement of protein, omega 3, calcium, iodine, selenium and zinc. This is a result of growing consumer awareness and increased uptake of sustainable seafood from Australian brands and retailers, which incentivises fisheries to commit to sustainable fishing and responsible aquaculture.

Summary Apparent consumption Apparent consumption in this analysis measures the amount of food and non-alcoholic beverages purchased from the food retail sector (major supermarkets and smaller outlets such as convenience stores, butchers, seafood shops, bakeries, delis and fresh food markets). Accepted studies investigated drivers and/or barriers to seafood consumption in Australia through qualitative, quantitative, or mixed method designs. Initial searches identified 504 publications from which fourteen met the criteria for the review process.

Australians love their red meat and poultry but seafood is fast catching up in terms of popularity and has always been an important part of Australian culture and diet. In this study, a secondary analysis of data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Australian Health Survey (2011-2013) was undertaken to provide an indication of the specific types of seafood Australians are consuming, and to describe the sociodemographic variation in consumption patterns. Seafood consumption is a key focus for the Australian seafood industry. Identifying and then responding to the perceived barriers to the purchase and consumption of fresh seafood among Australian consumers is a priority.
