Happily, after lying empty for many years, the building was renovated in the late nineties and is now in use by a public house chain. The Union Rooms is one of a couple of large Wetherspoons located just across from Newcastle Central station. It is surprising to have two so close together.

Not only did the new-ish owners decide to do away with the Union Rooms name and rename it Okana - what the fuck is an Okana? - they also spent a small fortune doing the grand old building out. So as predicted, the rebrand and refurbishment have failed and it is once again on the market. The Pub closed in January for a 'quick spruce up' and has failed to reopen.
