Float Glass Process

The Float Glass Process is a multi-step glass manufacturing process where liquid glass is formed by "floating" it on molten metal. First, raw materials are weighed, mixed and moved by conveyor from the initial batch house into the furnace.
A float plant, which operates non-stop for between 11-15 years, makes around 6000 kilometers of glass a year in thicknesses of 0.4mm to 25mm and in widths up to 3 meters. The float process has been licensed to more than 40 manufacturers in 30 countries.

The Float Process Step by Step
The Float Process Stage 2: Float bath Glass from the melter flows gently over a refractory spout on to the mirror-like surface of molten tin, starting at 1,100°C and leaving the float bath as a solid ribbon at 600°C. The principle of float glass is unchanged from the 1950s.
Float glass is a sheet of glass made by floating molten glass on a bed of molten metal of a low melting point, typically tin, [1] although lead was used for the process in the past. [2]

Pilkington Float Glass Process
The NSG Group's video on the Pilkington Float Glass Process provides an in depth look at how float glass is made and its multitude of uses. The video takes you step-by-step through each phase in ...
The float glass process is defined as a method for producing flat glass by floating a ribbon of molten glass on a bath of molten tin, which creates a smooth and uniform surface without the need for extensive grinding and polishing. This process results in glass sheets with consistent thicknesses and flat surfaces, commonly used for windows and mirrors. AI generated definition based on ...

Watch the magic of this science-based process begins to unfold, in a series of stages on a float line that may be nearly half a kilometre long. Raw materials...

The float glass technology rapidly replaced the older glass manufacturing methods and transformed glass production around the world. Today, the vast majority of flat glass utilized is manufactured by the float glass process.
