The quest for top-quality granite leads quarry operators to some of the world's most rugged and remote landscapes. One prominent source is the Treinkopf quarry in Norway, which has supplied granite for many Olympic curling stones.

Quarrying is a labor-intensive process that involves carefully blasting and extracting large blocks of granite with minimal damage. These blocks are then transported to specialized factories for further processing.

In the factory, the granite blocks undergo meticulous inspection. Only the best are selected for further production. These blocks are then sawn into massive slabs, which are further cut into smaller rectangles using diamond-impregnated wire.
The resulting slabs, now a manageable size, are sent for final polishing. This step removes any rough edges and prepares the granite for the subsequent curling stone manufacturing process.

Once polished, the granite slabs are cut into cylindrical slices, each weighing around 42 pounds (19 kg). These slices are then ground andveal, transforming them into the perfect 4.5-inch (114 mm) diameter and 1.5-inch (38 mm) height of a standard curling rock.
The final step is adding the handle, or "running surface" to the bottom of the stone. This is made from a different piece of granite, selected for its hardness and ability to maintain a consistent "curl" over time. The resulting stone is then ready for use on the curling rink.

Once manufactured, curling stones embark on a journey from the factory to the rink. They're meticulously cared for to ensure consistent performance and longevity. This includes regular storage, maintenance, and transportation to tournaments around the world.
Specialized equipment is used to move and maintain the stones. They're stored on custom racks overnight and transported on special trolleys during games. This consistent, careful handling ensures that the stones remain 'fair' to all players, maintaining the spirit of curling.
