Kyle Jun 27, 2026

For many homeowners, an old set of drawers presents a dilemma. They are sturdy pieces of wood, yet they no longer serve their original purpose. Rather than sending them to a landfill or watching them gather dust in a basement, the most satisfying solution is to transform them through repurposing.

Preparing the Raw Materials

The first step in any successful repurposing project is preparation. You must assess the condition of the drawers and determine if they are solid or constructed from particleboard. Solid wood drawers are ideal because they can withstand sanding, staining, and heavy use without warping.

Before you begin altering the structure, remove all the old hardware. Take a moment to clean the wood thoroughly. Grease, dust, and old adhesives can prevent finishes from adhering properly. A clean surface ensures that your new creation will last for years.

Vertical Storage Solutions

One of the most popular methods of how to repurpose drawers is to mount them vertically on a wall. This turns a flat piece of furniture into a compact bookshelf or a display unit. By removing the back panel, you create an open cubby that is perfect for holding books, plants, or kitchenware.

To achieve a professional look, ensure that the drawers are mounted securely to the wall studs. This prevents sagging over time. You can leave the finish natural to showcase the wood grain, or you can paint the units to match the aesthetic of the room.

Tiered Organization

Stacking drawers on top of one another creates an instant side table or bench. This configuration is highly functional and requires minimal effort. Simply align the drawers so the fronts are flush and secure them together if necessary.

The varying depths created by the stacked design add visual interest. You can use the top surface for decor and the open spaces beneath for storing blankets or pillows. This method is arguably the easiest entry point for beginners exploring how to repurpose drawers.

Imagine the possibilities! Tell me what you think of this project!! Find us at:... | By Whimsy | Do you have an old salt and pepper shaker around your house? Here's one thing you might do with it. For this project, you need at least one shaker, some yarn or ribbon or lace if you're choosing, some twine or wire and in this case, I'm using some bracelet twine and a few beads if you're choosing. I'm also going to be using this silk flower but you wouldn't necessarily have to do that in yours. The first thing I'm going to do is wrap my yarn in my ribbon and lace around a piece of cardboard many times. I'm going to set that aside for a minute while I next feed my twine through the holes of the top of the salt and pepper shakers. When I'm done with that, I'm going to add my bees to the top that will leave me two loose strings coming out the bottom of my salt and pepper shaker. Next, I'm taking the black twine and I'm going to feed it through all of the pieces I have wrapped around my cardboard. This way, I can gather them up and tie it off. I'm leaving lots of extra twine and I'm going to feed that right through the middle of my flower. Now, I'm going to attach all of that to the twine I fed through my salt and pepper shaker and once it's tied off, I'll pull my twine up tight. Then, I simply tie it off at the top and cut it to the length that I want. The inspiration for this project actually came from a blog called Salvaged Living. I encourage you to check out Kim Pepper Creative in all that she's doing. She has some amazing projects over there and of course, like all artists and creatives, I just have to adapt it a little to make it my own. This is such a fun project that almost anyone can do and I love how it add such a fun little whimsical vibe to anywhere I might place it. If we haven't met, my name is Sandy from WhimsyBarn. Check out my online shop. Maybe jump on our email list but definitely come back tomorrow because we'll have more vintage goodness.

Artists and hobbyists often require organized storage for supplies. Repurposing drawers provides a customizable solution for this need. You can install the drawers horizontally to create a rolling craft cart.

Each drawer can be dedicated to a specific medium, such as paintbrushes, fabric, or beads. The smooth gliding action of the drawer ensures that tools are easy to access during a project. This setup maximizes efficiency and keeps the workspace clutter-free.

Computer and Cable Management

In a modern home office, managing cables is essential. An old dresser drawer can be shallowly mounted under a desk to act as a hiding spot for chargers and adapters.

This application helps maintain the clean lines of a minimalist workspace. It is a practical way to reduce visual noise while keeping technology powered and ready to use. It demonstrates the versatility of the process beyond simple storage.

Core Idea: Outdoor and Kid-Friendly Designs

Garden Potting Bench

With a weather-resistant finish, drawers become excellent outdoor storage. Attaching a few drawers to a frame creates a small potting bench. The drawers can be pulled out to hold seeds, gloves, and small gardening tools.

This repurposing project is highly functional and adds a rustic touch to a garden space. It protects your equipment from the elements while keeping them easily accessible when you need them.

Toy Organization for Children

For families looking to organize a child’s room, shallow drawers are ideal. Children can easily see the contents of an open drawer, which reduces the "what do I want to play with?" dilemma.

Labeling the drawers with pictures or words helps children learn to clean up independently. This turns the act of tidying up into a game rather than a chore, fostering responsibility from a young age.

Enhancing Aesthetic Appeal

Regardless of the function you choose, the visual appeal of the piece is vital. The goal of how to repurpose drawers is to create something that looks intentional and stylish. If the drawer fronts have intricate details, they will become a focal point in the room.

Consider mixing and matching different drawer fronts if the original sets are broken. This creates a unique, eclectic look that is both charming and conversation-worthy. The final product should feel like a curated piece of design, not a collection of scraps.
