Crafting a Perfect Wedge Pillow Cover: A Comprehensive Guide

Embarking on a sewing project can be an incredibly rewarding experience, and creating a wedge pillow cover is an excellent starting point for beginners and seasoned sewers alike. This guide will walk you through the process, ensuring you create a functional and stylish addition to your home decor.

Gather Your Materials
Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary materials. Here's a list to help you get started:

- Wedge pillow insert (measure the size before purchasing fabric)
- Fabric (1/2 yard for a 20" x 20" pillow)
- Sewing machine with a universal needle
- Thread to match your fabric
- Scissors or rotary cutter and mat
- Straight pins
- Iron and ironing board
- Tape measure
Measure and Cut Your Fabric

Accurate measurements are crucial for a well-fitting pillow cover. Measure your wedge pillow insert, then add 1/2" to each side for seam allowance. Cut your fabric according to these dimensions.
Prepare Your Fabric
Before sewing, press your fabric with an iron to remove any wrinkles and make sewing easier. If your fabric is prone to fraying, consider using a serger or zigzag stitch to finish the edges.

Sew the Long Sides
With right sides facing together, align the long edges of your fabric. Use straight pins to secure them in place. Sew along the edge, leaving the short sides open. Backstitch at the beginning and end for added strength.
Create the Wedge Shape

To create the wedge shape, you'll need to sew the short sides at an angle. First, determine the angle by measuring the height of your wedge pillow insert and dividing it by the width. For a 20" x 20" pillow, the angle is approximately 60 degrees.
Fold your fabric along the seam line, creating a crease at the angle you just calculated. Use this crease as a guide to sew along, creating the wedge shape. Backstitch at the beginning and end.

Finish the Edges
Press your seams open to create a crisp edge. If desired, topstitch along the bottom edge for a polished look. Ensure you leave the top of the pillow open for inserting the insert.
Insert the Pillow Insert
Turn your pillow cover right side out and press the opening flat. Insert your wedge pillow insert, ensuring it's fully inside the cover. Gently push out any corners or wrinkles.
Close the Opening
Fold the raw edges of the opening towards the inside of the pillow cover. Press in place. Topstitch along the edge, closing the opening and securing the insert inside.
Enjoy Your New Wedge Pillow Cover
Congratulations! You've just sewn a beautiful wedge pillow cover. Show it off in your living room, bedroom, or anywhere you'd like to add a touch of personal style. Happy sewing!
