Understanding Bow Anatomy and Wood Selection

Before you make your first cut, you must understand the basic anatomy of a bow. The main body is called the stave, which is the long wooden stick. The rigid center section is the handle, while the curved ends are the limbs. These limbs act as levers, storing energy when you draw the string. For beginners, a simple straight stave of yew, osage orange, or hickory is ideal due to their strength and flexibility. The goal is to find a piece of wood that is strong yet pliable, avoiding any knots, cracks, or irregularities in the grain.

Preparing the Stave

Once you have selected your wood, preparation is key to ensuring consistent performance. You need to cut the stave to its approximate final length, usually around your wingspan. After cutting, the wood must be seasoned, or dried, for an extended period. Air drying for at least six months, or preferably a year, relieves internal moisture and prevents warping or breaking later. During this time, you should also identify the belly of the bow, which is the side that faces you when you shoot; this side will eventually face the string.

Shaping the Limbs
