How to Put Up Wall Molding: A Step-by-Step Guide

Installing molding on a wall is one of the most effective ways to elevate the character and architectural detail of a room. Whether you are refreshing a space with new crown molding or adding baseboards to frame the perimeter, the process combines precise measurement with careful execution. This guide walks you through the entire workflow, from gathering tools to finishing touches, ensuring a polished result that looks professional.

Essential Tools and Materials

A successful installation begins with having the right equipment on hand. Investing in quality tools not only makes the process smoother but also ensures cleaner joints and a tighter fit against the wall. You will need both cutting instruments and fastening tools to complete the job efficiently.

  • Measuring tape and pencil for accurate layout.
  • Miter saw or miter box with backsaw for precise angles.
  • Coping saw for creating seamless joints.
  • Power drill with finishing nailer or hammer and brads.
  • Wood filler and putty knife for hiding imperfections.
  • Sandpaper and painter’s tape for a flawless finish.

Measuring and Planning Your Layout

Before making a single cut, you must map out the entire run. Measure the perimeter of the room or the specific wall section where the molding will sit. Transfer these measurements to the molding material, marking clearly where each cut will occur. Planning for corners and transitions at this stage prevents waste and keeps the project on schedule.

Understanding Inside and Outside Corners

The key to seamless corners lies in understanding miter angles. Inside corners, such as those found in hallways or beneath windows, typically require a 45-degree cut on each piece so they meet flush. Outside corners, like those on the face of a fireplace, use the opposite orientation of the 45-degree cut. Accurately identifying the corner type ensures the molding fits together without gaps.

Cutting the Molding

With your layout finalized, it is time to cut the material. Set your miter saw to the correct angle based on the corner type you are tackling. When cutting, always account for the fact that the saw blade removes a small amount of material, known as the kerf. To compensate, keep the molding snug against the fence and make decisive, single cuts.

For tight inside corners, professionals often use a coping technique. Instead of relying solely on the miter angle, you cut the front piece flat and use a coping saw to carve the back edge to fit the profile of the adjacent piece. This method accommodates minor imperfections and creates a tighter joint than standard miter cuts alone.

Fitting and Securing the Molding

Dry fitting is a critical step that should not be rushed. Place each cut piece onto the wall without adhesive or nails to verify the alignment. If gaps appear at the joints, use a pencil to mark where excess material needs to be trimmed. Adjust the angles slightly until the pieces butt together tightly.

Once the fit is confirmed, you can attach the molding to the wall. Use a nail gun to drive finishing nails through the molding and into the wall studs or plaster behind it. Space the nails roughly every 16 inches to maintain a secure hold. Be mindful to position the nails so they are concealed by the next row of molding or will be filled with caulk later.

Finishing Touches

After the molding is secured, the installation is not quite complete. Fill the nail holes and any gaps between the molding and the wall with painter’s caulk. This step creates a uniform surface and hides the nails that secure the structure. Sand any excess filler gently once it has dried to ensure a smooth transition.

Finally, apply a fresh coat of paint or stain to blend the molding with the updated palette of the room. This finishing layer protects the wood and ensures the molding integrates seamlessly with the existing decor, completing the transformation of the space.
