Once the fibers expand, the internal glue weakens, and the board begins to delaminate. This is not merely a cosmetic issue; it is a structural failure. Multiple coats of high-quality paint create a hard shell that shields the underlying sealant and caulk. For maximum durability, a semi-gloss or enamel finish is recommended over the baseboard. These finishes resist scrubbing and hold up better in humid environments than flat paints. Furthermore, maintaining the integrity of the caulk lines is crucial; inspect the joints annually and replace any cracked or shrinking caulk immediately to ensure the waterproof barrier remains intact.

Alternative Materials: When to Deviate from the Plan
While it is possible to waterproof MDF baseboard effectively, it is often more practical to choose a material that is naturally resistant to moisture. If your project is in a bathroom, mudroom, or kitchen, consider alternatives that eliminate the risk of warping altogether. Materials such as PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), polymer composites, or solid wood species like teak or cedar are excellent choices. These materials are engineered to handle humidity without the need for complex sealing procedures.
