What Exterior Colors Go with Red Brick? Stunning Curb Appeal Ideas

Choosing the perfect exterior color palette for a home with red brick begins with understanding the unique character of the brick itself. Unlike standard siding, brick offers a deep, rich, and often variegated canvas that can serve as the foundational anchor for the entire house. The goal is to create a harmonious relationship where the siding, trim, and roof work together to either complement the warmth of the brick or provide a sophisticated contrast that allows it to stand out.

Embracing Neutral Tones for Timeless Elegance

Neutral colors remain the most versatile and classic approach for pairing with red brick. These hues create a balanced backdrop that allows the brick to shine without overwhelming the visual senses. Whites, creams, and soft ivories offer a crisp, clean contrast that makes the red tones pop, particularly in historic or traditional architectural styles. This combination feels bright, inviting, and perpetually fresh.

For a more modern and subdued aesthetic, consider deeper neutrals like gray and taupe. Charcoal gray provides a dramatic, sophisticated frame that highlights the texture of the brick, while lighter grays create a softer, more contemporary look. Taupe and greige (a blend of gray and beige) bridge the gap between the warmth of the brick and the coolness of the siding, resulting in a balanced and refined exterior that ages beautifully.

Coordinating with the Undertones

Not all red brick is created equal, and the specific undertone of your brick is the single most important factor in color selection. Observing whether the brick leans toward orange, brown, or purple is crucial for achieving a cohesive design.

Cool (Purple/Blue)Off-White, Sage Green, Navy Blue, Dark Gray, Deep Green

Matching the undertone creates a seamless transition between the brick and the siding. For example, if your brick has warm orange undertones, siding with a slight beige or warm gray will create harmony. Conversely, if your brick has cool purple notes, a crisp off-white or a deep navy will prevent the overall look from appearing too warm or muddy.

Playing with Contrast and Depth

While neutrals are safe, introducing a bold contrasting color can result in a stunning and unique exterior. The key to success with dark colors is ensuring ample natural light and strategic landscaping to prevent the home from feeling closed in. Deep charcoal, navy, or even rich forest green can create a dramatic, mansion-like aesthetic that makes the red brick act as a striking accent.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, a light or pastel siding can create a charming cottage-like feel. Soft blues, dusky roses, or pale yellows provide a gentle contrast that feels romantic and whimsical. This approach works exceptionally well in smaller doses, such as on the upper floors or gables, while keeping the brick as the primary visual element.

The Critical Role of Trim and Accents

Often the deciding factor in a successful color scheme is the trim. The color you choose for window frames, doors, and eaves acts as the punctuation in the sentence of your home's exterior. White trim is the most traditional and reliable choice, offering a clean separation between the siding and the brick.

For a more integrated and modern look, consider using a color pulled directly from the palette. Using a dark gray roof and dark gray trim, for instance, creates a cohesive monolithic effect that grounds the structure. Alternatively, a bold colored trim—such as a deep green or blue—can add a touch of personality and highlight architectural details without overpowering the brick.

Considering the Roof and Landscape

The roof color acts as the capstone for the exterior design, and it must work in tandem with the brick and siding. Darker roofs, such as black or dark gray, provide maximum contrast and make the house feel grounded and authoritative. Medium tones like brown or cedar shingles bridge the gap between the house and the earth, while light roofs can sometimes wash out the presence of the brick if not chosen carefully.

Finally, the landscape plays a vital role in the overall perception of your color choices. Brick looks naturally at home surrounded by greenery, but the specific foliage matters. Dark mulch or evergreen shrubs can complement cool-toned brick, while flowering plants with warm colors—such as marigolds or ornamental grasses—enhance the fiery tones of warmer brick. The goal is to ensure the environment feels like it belongs to the architecture, not fighting against it.

But after refreshing the trim and garage door with these classic paint colors, I can definitely say I love the original brick a little more. Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black and Country Tweed made the whole exterior feel a bit more moody and modern, but still very classic. However, adding the trim color to the front door has me concerned. We have four white columns and I don't know if the tweed color on such a large area of trim will work. I might try seeing if I can generate some AI images to help, but what's your instinct? Leave the front door trim white to match the columns or go Country Tweed? #Paintingourhome #dilemma #frontdoormakeover #garagedoor #swtricornblack #swcountrytweed #homeprojects #exterior #limewashing #redbrick #whitebrick #transformation #befofreandafter #garagedoorsofinstagram #diy #interiordesign #homedesign | Brickhomehaven | Facebook
