SMD LED: Identifying the Positive Side

George Jul 01, 2026

When it comes to working with Surface Mount Device (SMD) LEDs, one of the most common questions is: which side is positive? Understanding the polarity of SMD LEDs is crucial to ensure they light up correctly and to prevent any damage during soldering.

SMD LEDs, unlike their through-hole counterparts, do not have visible leads. Instead, they have flat pads on the bottom that connect to the PCB. Determining the positive side can be a bit tricky, but with the right knowledge, it's quite straightforward.

Identifying SMD LED Pads

Before identifying the positive pad, it's essential to understand the SMD LED pads. SMD LEDs typically have two or three pads. The two-pad variants are either Common Cathode (CC) or Common Anode (CA), while the three-pad variants are Common Cathode with a separate ground pad.

For this article, we'll focus on the two-pad variants, as they are the most common.

Common Cathode (CC) SMD LEDs

In CC SMD LEDs, both pads are connected to the cathode (negative) terminal. The positive (anode) terminal is not connected to any pad. To find the positive side, you need to look for the marking on the top of the LED. It's usually a small '+' sign or the word 'Anode'.

If there's no marking, you can use a multimeter to test the pads. Connect the multimeter probes to the pads while the LED is off. The pad with the higher resistance is the positive (anode) side.

In CA SMD LEDs, both pads are connected to the anode (positive) terminal. The cathode (negative) terminal is not connected to any pad. To find the positive side, look for the marking on the top of the LED. It's usually a small '-' sign or the word 'Cathode'.

If there's no marking, you can use a multimeter to test the pads. Connect the multimeter probes to the pads while the LED is off. The pad with the lower resistance is the positive (anode) side.

Once you've identified the positive side, you can proceed to solder the LED onto the PCB. It's crucial to solder the positive pad first to prevent any short circuits. This is known as 'wetting' the pad, which makes it easier to solder the other pad.

After soldering the positive pad, clip the LED into place and solder the negative pad. Ensure that the LED is correctly aligned with the PCB pads to prevent any short circuits or open connections.

Testing SMD LEDs

After soldering, it's essential to test the LED to ensure it's working correctly. Connect a power source to the PCB and observe the LED. If it lights up, then you've successfully identified the positive side and soldered the LED correctly.

If the LED doesn't light up, double-check your soldering and ensure that the positive and negative pads are correctly connected to the power source.

In the world of electronics, understanding the polarity of components like SMD LEDs is a fundamental skill. With practice, identifying the positive side of SMD LEDs becomes second nature, allowing you to work more efficiently and confidently. Happy soldering!
