The BMW R1200RT is celebrated for its balance of power and agility, but like all machines, it has potential ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) issues that can affect ride quality. Owners frequently report inconsistent damping, sudden stiffness, or failure to hold settings—issues that impact comfort and handling. These problems often stem from faulty sensors, worn hydraulic components, or software glitches within the ECU.

Common ESA problems include delayed response to terrain changes, uneven suspension levels, and ECU error codes indicating pressure or voltage irregularities. Diagnosing the root cause requires specialized tools, such as OBD-II scanners and suspension analyzers, to interpret sensor data. Timely maintenance, including flushing the fluid system and updating firmware, can prevent long-term damage.

Strange problem with ESA, 2005 model k26, supposedly this year shouldnt have ESA, just manual rear shock. Well mine has electronic shock which when removed and connected to battery it works. However using switch nothing at all happens.

Nothing on disp. The ESA may not necessarily throw a fault code if it isn't operating, unless there is feedback on the ESA position such as a ride height sensor as on the LC. The simplest test is to check the ride height as per my opening paragraph.

The tech had the bike for an hour, ran diagnostics, found nothing wrong, BUT was able to get the preload working (and I witnessed it working).
