it sounds loud and like a diesel engine. the sound is normal. search on youtube for the same engine to compare.

also search on here. so many people posted about this in the past 5 years. Any car with direct injection will make the tickling noise.

Because of the dual injection there will be times its running on port injection and you won't hear the ticking so it won't be consistent like a GDI only engine. The A25A is a good engine but many reviewers have stated how coarse it is at higher revs. At the 11:00 mark in the following video the Car Care Nut discusses direct injection and port injection, and at 14:32 he addresses the high pressure fuel pump associated with direct injection and the noise it produces.

Toyota uses its blended approach of port and direct fuel injection to give the best possible performance, emissions and economy. It is difficult to say when the port, direct or both injectors are active because it depends on many variables like throttle position, load, engine speed and even engine temperature. Noises explained: Loud for the first few minutes - your new car has both port injection and high pressure direct injection.

When the vehicle idles using the direct injection, it is quite loud. The vehicle should only do this when warming up. Loud when backing up on electric power.

Direct injection has a lot of good things going for it, including precise metering of fuel, cooling the combustion chamber, etc. But because fuel is injected directly into the cylinder rather than through the intake ports, the crankcase gasses (i.e. oil vapor) that's recirculated into the ports can get burned/caked on the intake valves.
Toyota's solution to this issue is to have a separate set. Toyota calls this system the D-4S or Dynamic Force Engine. Direct injection fires fuel directly into the high compression combustion chamber, which requires very high fuel pressures, much like a diesel engine except for the ignition source (which is why it sounds similar at idle).
High pressure fuel pump, the computer utilizes both port and direct injection. The hpfp runs the port injectors.
