Linocut printmaking, a relief printing technique, involves carving a design into a soft linoleum surface. The name 'jigsaw' linocut refers to the method of cutting the linoleum into smaller, interlocking pieces, much like a jigsaw puzzle. This approach allows artists to create complex, large-scale designs that would be challenging or impossible with a single block.

Understanding Jigsaw Linocut

The beauty of jigsaw linocut lies in its ability to combine the simplicity of linocut with the complexity of multi-block printing. It's a process that demands precision, planning, and a touch of puzzle-solving.

At its core, jigsaw linocut involves three primary steps: designing, carving, and printing. The design phase is crucial, as it determines the complexity of the final print. Artists often sketch their ideas on paper before transferring them onto the linoleum blocks.

Designing for Jigsaw Linocut

Designing for jigsaw linocut requires a keen eye for detail and a strategic mindset. Artists must break down their image into manageable, interlocking pieces. Each piece, or 'block,' must contain a part of the final image, and the blocks must fit together seamlessly like a jigsaw puzzle.

Considerations during the design phase include the number of blocks needed, the complexity of each block, and how the blocks will interlock. Some artists use software to help plan their designs, while others prefer the tactile experience of drawing directly onto the linoleum.

Carving the Linoleum Blocks

Once the design is finalized, the carving process begins. Using specialized tools, artists carefully cut away the unwanted linoleum, revealing the design in relief. The tools range from small, fine-point needles for intricate details to larger, U-shaped tools for cutting away larger areas.

Carving requires a steady hand and a keen eye. It's a meticulous process that demands patience and attention to detail. Each block must be carved with precision to ensure a clean, crisp print. Once carved, the blocks are inked and printed in registration, meaning they are aligned and printed one at a time to create the final image.

Jigsaw linocut's versatility is one of its most appealing aspects. It can be used to create a wide range of artwork, from intricate illustrations to bold, graphic designs.

One of the key advantages of jigsaw linocut is its ability to create large, detailed images. By using multiple blocks, artists can create prints that would be impossible with a single block. This makes it an ideal technique for creating large-scale, complex images.

I finally had time to make a few test prints for this one today. I am still experimenting with paper and will probably need to order a different one… What’s funny is that it took me about 10 minutes to correctly assemble the jigsaw after cutting it. Too many little pieces. Seems that I have outsmarted myself this time. I’ll probably also share the carving and cutting process soon if anyone is interested and if I find the energy to edit the recorded clips. Honestly, making “content” is quit... Creating Large-Scale Images

To create large-scale images, artists must first determine the size of their final print. They then divide the image into blocks that, when printed in registration, will create the final image. The number and size of the blocks will depend on the complexity of the design and the desired size of the print.

Printing large-scale jigsaw linocuts requires a large printing press or the use of a pressbed that can accommodate the size of the paper. It also demands careful registration to ensure that each block is printed in the correct position relative to the others.

Exploring Color and Texture

Jigsaw linocut also offers artists the opportunity to explore color and texture. By carving different textures into the linoleum, artists can create a rich, tactile surface on their prints. Additionally, multiple blocks allow for the use of multiple colors, creating vibrant, multi-hued images.

To create multi-colored prints, artists must carve a separate block for each color in their design. Each block is then inked with a different color and printed in registration with the others. This process can be repeated multiple times to create complex, layered images.

In the ever-evolving world of printmaking, jigsaw linocut stands as a testament to human ingenuity and creativity. It's a technique that combines the tactile joy of carving with the intellectual challenge of puzzle-solving, resulting in stunning, intricate prints that captivate the eye and engage the mind. Whether you're a seasoned printmaker or a curious beginner, exploring jigsaw linocut is an adventure well worth taking.
