最簡單的方式是先掌握「空間、面、點」三個概念。in 表示在某個空間、區域或範圍之中；on 表示在表面、樓層或線上；at 則把地點視為一個特定的位置點。
The manager is in the office.
（經理在辦公室裡。）
The meeting room is on the third floor.
（會議室在三樓。）
She is waiting at the entrance.
（她正在入口處等候。）
at school 通常把 school 視為學習或活動的場所，重點是「人在學校」；in the school 則強調人在學校建築物的內部。
The children are at school.
（孩子們在學校上學。）
The parents are in the school.
（家長們在學校建築物裡。）
兩者都可能表示「在辦公室」，但觀察角度不同。at the office 把 office 視為工作地點；in the office 則強調人在辦公室內部。
She is at the office today.
（她今天人在辦公地點。）
She is in the office now.
（她現在人在辦公室裡。）
公車、火車、飛機等較大型或可以在其中活動的交通工具通常使用 on；汽車、計程車等較小型交通工具通常使用 in。
He is on the bus.
（他在公車上。）
She is in the car.
（她在車裡。）
英文通常把樓層視為一個平面，因此表示「在幾樓」時使用 on，而不是 in 或 at。
Our office is on the fifth floor.
（我們的辦公室在五樓。）
兩種說法都可以，但強調的概念不同。at the airport 把機場視為一個地點；in the airport 則特別強調人在機場建築物的內部。
We are at the airport.
（我們人在機場。）
There are several restaurants in the airport.
（機場裡有好幾家餐廳。）
