Creating a small concrete sidewalk is a practical project that enhances safety and aesthetics for any home or business. Planning and Permits
Before breaking ground, take time to map out the exact route of your sidewalk. Consider factors like drainage, sunlight, and proximity to underground utilities. For most residential projects, a sidewalk should be a minimum of 36 inches wide to accommodate a single person comfortably, while 48 inches is ideal for two people walking side by side. Measure the length and calculate the square footage to determine the exact amount of concrete you will need. Depending on your local regulations, you may need to check for homeowner association rules or municipal permits; contacting your local building department early can save you from costly rework later.
Preparing the Base
A stable base is the secret to a long-lasting concrete slab. Excavate the area to a depth of about 6 inches, removing grass, topsoil, and any organic debris. Use a compactable granular base, such as crushed stone or gravel, to fill the trench. Spread the material in layers no more than 3 inches deep at a time, compacting each layer with a hand tamper or plate compactor until it is firm. These pedestals prevent the wire from sinking to the bottom during pouring. Pouring and Finishing
Pour the concrete directly from a mixer or wheelbarrow into the prepared forms, working in sections to maintain manageability. Use a screeding tool—a straight board or metal strip—to level the concrete across the top by moving it back and forth in a sawing motion. After screeding, switch to a bull float to smooth the surface and push small aggregate particles beneath the slick top layer. Curing and Maintenance

Sprinkle water on the surface regularly or use a fog spray to maintain moisture during the curing period.
