Introduction
Nasal surgery or which Rhinoplasty is a corrective surgery performed by a highly experienced cosmetic surgeon. The surgery is performed to make good any defects in the shape and size of the nose.
The surgeon performs the operation keeping in mind the ethnic and racial background of the person and the typical features depicted by that nose. A skilled surgeon will keep a balance between surgical parameters, ethnic identity, personality and the desires of the patient.
The surgery can correct health and aesthetic issues. Most cases are about the looks of the nose but some cases require medical attention to restore the heath of the person. Rhinoplasty helps in solving upper respiratory issues and any inflammatory conditions in the nasal track.
A successful surgery is one where the person gets lots of compliments from his friends and peer group but they cannot pin-point what has changed in him that makes him attractive. This level of expertise is hard to get. Therefore the patient has to do a thorough research on which Rhinoplasty surgeon would be the best match for his case.
The Defects to the Nose which require Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty helps in curing and correcting many defects which take a toll on person’s health and steal away the beauty of the face. The defects may range from a simple hump on the nose to a complete reconstruction of the nasal profile.
The defects are divided into two categories. They are
Functional: These are the defects which affect the health of a person. They are related to the working of the nose and the breathing mechanism of the body. The people having functional defects need immediate medical attention to cure the problem and restore the health.
Deviated septum is a common yet serious problem in patients where the delicate nasal wall separating the nostrils is not aligned properly. Due to various reasons the septum has moved from its natural position and is blocking airflow of either or both nostrils. This creates lots of problems to the patient in breathing.
Surgery is the last resort to restore the alignment of the septum when medication and other non-invasive procedures do not work.
People suffering from severe inflammatory illnesses like Asthma, Sinusitis, Swollen Turbinates and Nasal Polyps find solace through nasal surgery.
Cosmetic: These are the reasons which are related to the looks of the nose. Although the patient is healthy he is not happy with the way his nose looks. There is usually a hump or bump on the nose or a depression on the nasal wall.
This is also called as beauty enhancement surgery as the surgeon takes into consideration the overall features of the face and decides on a perfect procedure to get the desired shape.

Procedure for Nose Job
The procedure for nose job requires a thorough preparation on the surgeon’s part. Since the nose is a delicate organ any negligence during the procedure may lead to a permanent damage to the nose.
During the initial consultation sessions the surgeon gets the vital information from the patient which will be of use during the surgery. The patient is required to divulge all information related to his health and habits honestly. If he keeps secrets there are chances of serious complications developing during or after surgery.
The surgeon creates a 3d image profile of the nose by taking pictures of the nose from various angles. This helps him to process the images and show an 3d animation to the patient of what his nose will look like after the surgery.
The patient can ask the surgeon to make corrections at specific places and the same will be noted by him. This gives confidence to the patient that he is in good hands and his desires will comes true.
Step 1: Unconsciousness – The patient is given anesthesia by the surgical staff and rendered unconscious. The anesthesia is usually general but sometimes there can be local if the surgeon thinks that is appropriate.
Protective gear is placed on other delicate organs like eyes and mouth to avoid any mishap. This also gives the surgeon a firm grip on the area of operation and can avoid any mistake due to involuntary movement of the facial muscles.
Step 2: Incisions – The cuts are made along the columella (the part where nose meets the upper lip) to access the deeper layers of the nose. This is called as open Rhinoplasty.
The skin is raised gently and secured with medical clips. This lets the surgeon operate upon the cartilages and bones to create the perfect shape desired.
The surgeon may also make incisions inside the nostrils and make the required corrections. This is called closed Rhinoplasty. It is difficult than the open procedure.
Step 3: Setting right Deviations – The surgeon gives top priority to the functional problems. He will make sure that the health of the patient is restored and any deviations of the septum or other nasal parts are corrected.
This procedure may also require harvesting and grafting of cartilages to create and secure the change. After the changes are made the new structure is secured with medical sutures.
Step 4: Restructuring and reshaping – In this phase the surgeon shifts his focus towards the aesthetics of the nose and tries to give it a good shape and size. The beauty of the face is enhanced by a proportionate and natural looking nose which complements the overall face and personality.
The surgeon may have to use skin and tissues grafts from other parts of the body to give the nose proper volume and shape.
Step 5: Closing the Incisions – After the procedure is completed the new internal structure is secured with dissoluble sutures. The skin is gently brought back to the original place and stitched to make it secured.
Splints are placed within the nostrils and over the nose to protect the new nose. The protective gear helps protect the nasal area while it is still healing. Bandages and soaking cloth are placed beneath the nostrils to soak any blood or fluids oozing out.
Step 6: Recovery Period – In this stage the patient is given many instructions for speedy recovery from the surgery. He has to follow a strict and healthy diet and take the medicines regularly.
Depending on the healing power of the body it will take anywhere from few weeks to few months for total healing of the internal structure. However the new nose will take shape gradually over a period of one year.
The first week will be the most annoying and the patient has to be prepared for the discomfort. He should frequently clean the nostrils with cloth and antiseptic liquid as blowing the nose is prohibited. Neglecting to do so may lead to hematoma (pooling of blood in nasal cavities) and other infections.
The patient has to visit the clinic on regular intervals to check the progress of his healing. The doctor will make note and change the prescription while slowly reducing the dosage.
Normal activity can be resumed after a period of 2 or 3 weeks but any heavy cardio activity and other exercise regimes should be started only after consulting the doctor. There is a risk of rupture of nasal walls as they are still healing.
Alternatives to Rhinoplasty
Due to the downtime and the obvious discomfort that comes with a surgical Rhinoplasty the surgeons started experimenting with other techniques which could give immediate results with zero downtime.
Non surgical nose job is a procedure which can make changes to the nasal shape and size using injectable dermal fillers into the subcutaneous layers of the nose. The layer is accessed with a hydermal needle and the substance injected through a syringe.
Slight deformities like humps, bumps or depressions can be corrected by this procedure. Any defects left out after the primary Rhinoplasty surgery can also be corrected by this method.
The results of this procedure are temporary and will last for about a year and a half. After that, the patient either goes for a refilling or chooses a permanent procedure.
The surgeons use only the FDA approved dermal fillers which are completely safe for most patients. Furthermore, skin test is also done before injecting the material to see if the patient’s body reacts severely.
