Rarity Colors Borderlands 2

All Borderlands games use a ranking system for gear that follows the standard color-coding system for RPGs. Basically the higher is the rank, the rarest is the item - that is why a rank is called rarity. A rarer item is usually of better quality.

Despite some specificities, games of the series always use the following color scheme (from lowest to highest rarity): white; green; blue; purple. New player, never played BL1. I'm confused on how to interpret the color of item cards for determining the quality/rarity of the item. Do I guess correctly that the higher rarity should be a "better" item (in what respects might be debatable)? But I'm also confused in how to interpret the colors I'm seeing on the item card to match to rarity.
