Homeowners often look out at their lawn, see a series of small holes, and immediately assume the damage is the work of moles. While these creatures are skilled tunnelers, the assumption that they leave the type of holes typically seen in gardens is often incorrect. Understanding the difference between surface disturbances caused by insects and the deeper architectural work of a mole is the first step in accurate diagnosis.
Moles are insectivores, meaning their diet consists primarily of grubs, earthworms, and beetle larvae found within the soil. Unlike rodents that eat plants, moles are digging for food, and their foraging creates two distinct types of damage. You will rarely, if ever, find a classic "hole" where a mole has pushed up the dirt, because their goal is to create a tunnel just below the surface to harvest their food.
The Difference Between Mole Tunnels and Visible Holes
The primary reason moles do not leave holes in the traditional sense is that they live almost entirely underground. They construct deep runways that provide shelter and access to food, pushing the soil to the surface to form volcano-shaped ridges. These raised lines, known as ridges, are the main surface evidence of their activity, rather than discrete holes. The soil they displace is spread out along the tunnel ceiling, preventing the formation of open gaps where a predator could spot them.

Identifying Mole Activity
If you are trying to determine if the damage in your yard is from moles, you should look for specific signs that differ from the holes left by other animals. The presence of raised, winding ridges of soil is the strongest indicator. Additionally, you may notice that sections of your lawn feel spongy or soft, as the ground is literally floating on a network of tunnels. Plants may begin to wilt and die not due to a lack of water, but because the roots have been severed or separated from the soil by the tunneling process.

Exceptions to the Rule

One instance is during the spring breeding season when male moles come to the surface to search for females, leaving behind small, temporary holes that are quickly covered with soil.
Another scenario involves the presence of wildlife predators. If a mole is killed or displaced by a predator such as an owl, hawk, or fox, the predator might dig the mole out of its tunnel, leaving a distinct hole at the surface. However, this is evidence of an interaction that occurred below ground, not the mole’s own handiwork in creating its habitat.

The Real Culprits of Visible Holes
Because moles rarely create surface holes, the damage you are seeing is likely the work of other creatures. Squirrels and chipmunks are notorious for digging small, shallow holes while burying nuts or foraging for insects. These holes are usually neat, cylindrical, and located in open areas where the animals feel safe. Similarly, burrowing owls, snakes, and even digging bees create distinct entry points that are easily visible to the naked eye.
In many cases, the holes in your yard are the result of insect larvae living just below the surface. As these grubs feed on grass roots, they create loose soil that can collapse, or birds may dig them up, creating the small divots homeowners often mistake for mole holes. Correctly identifying the problem ensures you use the appropriate treatment method, saving you time and money.
