This process transforms a flat piece of paper into a three-dimensional landscape, allowing you to visualize elevation, terrain, and spatial relationships with remarkable clarity. Understanding Contour Lines and Elevation
Before you begin adding visual depth, you must decipher the existing language of the map. Contour lines are the primary tool cartographers use to represent elevation on a two-dimensional surface. Each line connects points of equal height above sea level, and the spacing between these lines indicates the steepness of the slope.
When contour lines are close together, the terrain is steep; when they are far apart, the land is relatively flat. To draw mountains accurately, you first identify the index contours—thicker, labeled lines—and use them to establish the vertical scale. By tracing these lines and observing their pattern, you can reconstruct the shape of the mountain range, determining where peaks, saddles, and ridges begin and end.

Identifying the Light Source
The visual illusion of depth is created through shading, and consistency is paramount. You must decide where the light is coming from before you apply a single pencil stroke. In the Northern Hemisphere, a common convention is to assume the light source is coming from the upper left, typically from the northwest.
This assumption dictates that the northwest-facing slopes will be highlighted, while the southeast-facing slopes fall into shadow. Establishing this light direction mentally ensures that your shading aligns with natural lighting conditions, preventing the map from looking flat or distorted. If you are depicting a specific time of day, adjust the angle accordingly, but maintain consistency throughout the entire drawing.
Applying the Hatching Technique
Once the light source is established, you can introduce shading to create the illusion of mass and volume. Hatching involves drawing a series of parallel lines to build up tone. For mountains, this means aligning the strokes with the slope of the terrain.

On slopes hit by the light, use a light touch to create subtle lines or leave the paper white. In the shaded areas, apply heavier pressure and draw the lines closer together to create a darker value. When drawing across a mountainside, the hatching should flow contourally, wrapping around the form just as the contour lines do. This technique, known as contour shading, reinforces the three-dimensional shape rather than fighting against it.
Utilizing Cross-Hatching for Depth

Adding Texture and Geological Character

For rocky outcrops, use a stippling technique—small, distinct dots—to create a rough, granular texture. If you are depicting snow-capped peaks, leave the paper white or use a light graphite dusting to represent the reflective surface. In forested mountain areas, short, downward strokes can represent tree cover, becoming sparser as the elevation increases. This attention to text detail prevents the mountain from looking like a generic blob and instead identifies it as a specific type of landform.
Layering and Final Adjustments
Creating a realistic mountain scene is rarely a one-step process; it requires building depth gradually. Begin with a light sketch to outline the silhouette and major contour lines. Then, apply the initial layer of shading lightly, focusing on the general value distribution.
Step back frequently to observe the composition. As you progress to the final layers, darken the extreme shadows and refine the edges where the mountain meets the sky or valley. You may need to erase unnecessary construction lines or soften hard edges with a blending stump to create a seamless gradient.
