Understanding the Purpose and Site Selection
Before digging, it is essential to understand what a dry well does and whether it is suitable for your property. Key factors influencing success include soil permeability, the depth of the water table, and proximity to property lines or foundations. Selecting a location at least 10 feet away from your home's foundation prevents structural moisture issues and ensures the water has adequate space to disperse safely.
Checking Regulations and Soil Conditions

Contacting your local building department is a necessary step to avoid fines or mandatory rework, as permits may be required. Furthermore, understanding your soil type is crucial; sandy soils drain quickly, while clay soils retain water and are unsuitable for a dry well.
