Planning Your Drainage Strategy
Before you dig, take time to map the flow of water across your land during a rain event. Observe how gravity moves water from higher elevations toward lower spots, and identify where a concentrated outlet is needed. You should also call your local utility locating service to mark buried lines for gas, electric, and communication lines to ensure safe excavation.
Consider the type of pipe and bedding material that suits your soil and climate. Solid pipes are commonly used for leading water to a discharge point, while perforated pipes allow for collection along a length if you are intercepting groundwater. Selecting the proper diameter, typically between four and six inches for residential lots, ensures the system can handle the expected volume without becoming overwhelmed.

Once the trench is cut, remove loose soil and debris, then compact the bottom slightly to create a stable base. Lay a consistent layer of aggregate, use a screed board or your shovel to level it, and verify the depth with your measuring tape and level so the pipe will sit at the designed elevation.
Laying the Pipe and Securing the System
Place the drainage pipe in the center of the trench, ensuring the top is flush with the surrounding soil depth and the pitch aligns with your layout. Join sections with couplers designed for the pipe diameter, and rotate each pipe segment until the flow path is straight and unobstructed.

Wrap the pipe with geotextile fabric if you are using perforated pipe in silty conditions, which helps prevent clogging while still allowing water to enter the perforations. This step is especially valuable in clay-heavy soils where small particles can quickly block open joints.
Backfilling, Compacting, and Final Testing
Gradually backfill the trench, placing layers of clean topsoil or a granular mix over the pipe and lightly compacting each layer with a hand tamper or the back of a shovel. Proper compaction prevents the pipe from floating or collapsing under soil pressure, which can block the flow and lead to settling.
