Taming a Lyst Saurian, commonly referred to as Icarus, represents one of the most rewarding yet challenging endeavors for a survivor in ARK: Survival Evolved. These majestic, dragon-like creatures offer not only speed and aesthetic appeal but also a crucial advantage for traversing the treacherous landscapes of the island. However, the process to get one to follow you is significantly more complex than simply feeding a passive herbivore. It requires preparation, patience, and a solid understanding of the unique mechanics involved with this specific species.
The Lyst Saurian: More Than Just a Pretty Face
Before attempting to form a bond, you must recognize why the Icarus is worth the effort. Unlike standard mounts, the Lyst Saurian possesses an innate ability that sets it apart: the power to breathe fire. This offensive capability makes it a formidable combatant against other creatures and rival players. Furthermore, its high speed and mobility allow for rapid exploration, making it an ideal choice for scouting missions or quick getaways. Understanding these inherent advantages is the first step in appreciating the time investment required for taming.
Locating the Icarus
You cannot tame what you cannot find, so knowing the creature's habitat is essential. Icarus mounts are native to the volcanic regions of the map, specifically the areas surrounding the active lava zones. They are rarely found in cooler climates, so head towards the mountains emitting constant smoke and lava flows. Be cautious, however, as these environments are also home to other aggressive predators who view the Icarus as competition or a meal; engaging in combat here requires extreme caution and high-tier weaponry.

Preparation is Key
Unlike taming a simple dinosaur, attempting to mount an Icarus without proper gear is a guaranteed death sentence. These creatures are aggressive by nature and will retaliate fiercely when approached. Ensure you are equipped with high-level armor, such as Flak or Tek gear, to mitigate their powerful bites and swipes. Additionally, bring sufficient ranged weaponry—such as a longneck rifle or Tek bow—to potentially subdue threats from a distance before they close the gap on you.
Gathering Sustenance
While the process varies slightly depending on the game's settings, the standard method for taming an Icarus relies on non-violent nourishment. You will need a significant supply of Narcotics and either Mejoberries or Sweet Vegetable Cake. Narcotics are crucial because the creature will actively fight the torpor effect applied during the feeding process. Stock up on these items before entering the creature's territory; running out mid-tame in a lava-filled environment leaves you extremely vulnerable.
The Taming Process
Once you have located a suitable Icarus and are fully prepared, approach slowly and cautiously. Engage the creature and begin dealing damage to initiate the fight, but switch to your tranquilizing method as soon as it stops focusing on other threats. Use your preferred method to apply torpor—either the Narcotics via injections or by utilizing the preferred food to slowly build a bond. This phase requires vigilance; you must constantly monitor your health, stamina, and the creature's aggression levels to avoid being overwhelmed.

Mounting the Beast
After successfully reducing the creature's health to a manageable level and allowing the torpor to take effect, you can attempt to form the bond. Right-click to interact and select the option to "Mount" or "Tame." If the taming percentage is high enough, you will be able to slap the creature into submission and designate it as your ally. Once the taming bar fills completely, the Icarus will officially recognize you as its master. At this moment, you can utilize the saddle item to equip a saddle and fully customize your ride for combat or transport.
Utilizing Your New Mount
With the Icarus now under your command, you can issue commands to Attack, Follow, or Stay. The true test of your partnership comes during flight; the Icarus is capable of breathing fire mid-air, allowing you to bombard enemies or clear obstacles from above. Mastering the aerial controls of this creature gives you a significant strategic edge, transforming the harsh skies of the ARK into your personal domain rather than a dangerous expanse.
