A trench box, also known as a trench shield or trench sheet, is a large, rigid structure designed to protect workers inside an excavation from cave-ins. Unlike traditional shoring that involves installing support systems to hold the soil in place, a trench box functions as a movable shield placed at the bottom of the trench. Its primary function is to bear the load of the surrounding soil if a collapse occurs, creating a safe working envelope where the soil can fall outward rather than onto the employees within.
