The most common cause of conical dirt piles, often referred to as "volcano mounds," is the Eastern Mole. Gopher removal is usually more complex and often requires the intervention of a professional pest control expert due to the depth of their tunnels.
For environmental causes, the solutions are generally low-impact. Worm casts can be easily dispersed across the lawn with a light raking and watering, which helps integrate the organic matter back into the soil without manual removal. For sediment and debris, improving drainage and establishing a solid perimeter, such as a gravel trench or landscape border, can prevent future dirt from accumulating.
