The baths are actually in the municipality of Casares but have always been known as Manilva Roman baths.

The Historic Roman Baths Charca de la Mina, just before you get to the Roman Baths has just been created by Manilva council. Beyond the beaches, Manilva is home to a significant historical site - the Roman Baths of La Hedionda. These ancient thermal baths, dating back to the 1st century BC, are a testament to the town's rich historical.

You book via a website in advance, just google Roman baths manilva and it'll take you there and you go through to book on eventbrite.es We went with our children and it was a lovely place. Scenery is fab and there are small, shallow pools to wash the mud off in and of course the Roman bath itself. These are Ferruginous Sulfur Baths, located in a beautiful and advantageous spot, which man has known how to take advantage of since Roman times.

The spa area, square, with a spherical vault with pendentives and two barrel vaults, is located on the right bank of the Albarrán stream and very close to the border with the municipality of Manilva. Set in the tranquil and rural landscape between Manilva and Casares, Hedionda Roman baths are the remains of the ancient bathhouse which dates back to the 1st century BC. The structure is still available for use today, free of charge.

Roman remains can be found in Sabinillas, Haza del Casareño, Lagunetas, Manilva and Castillo de la Duquesa which showcases the remnants of a Roman Baths, town, curing factory and even a necropolis. The roman baths are a lovely quiet spot, but can be busy at the weekends. People smear the sulphur rich mud all over their bodies, dry off in the sun then dip into the underground cvern baths built by the Romans, and very cool even on a hot day.

The baths are in the municipaity of Casares although technically closer to Manilva. Río de Manilva; Roman Baths; Sierra de Utrera - site location & directions This site is located in the province of Malaga, although only a few miles from the Cadíz province border, so very slightly 'out 0f area', but it is such an interesting place I'm including it here. It is also a definite 'Nightingale Trail'.

The high sulphur content is due to a sulphur spring which flows from a limestone outcrop above the valley. It attracted the attention of the Romans 2000 years ago and an arched bathing complex was created of which four chambers still exist.
