A positive head pump just has a flow switch in that turns the pump on when you open the shower valve. A negative head pump has non return valves in it and pressurizes the outpu,t then when you turn the shower on there is a pressure switch senses the drop in pressure and activates the pump. The pump will drive nothing other than the shower.

The pump needs to be on a shelf approx 500mm off the floor next to the cylinder - no other location space. I've been in touch with a good supplier of pumps and they've recommended a 3Bar negative head pump. This seems way over the top for what I require.
