The Ultimate Guide to Using Edging Stones: Master the Look

Amber Jun 01, 2026

Edging stones are the unsung heroes of landscape design, providing a clean, durable boundary between your lawn and garden beds. Used correctly, they prevent grass from encroaching into your flowerbeds and stop mulch from washing onto your lawn. This guide walks you through the entire process, from selecting the right material to the final compacting step, ensuring a professional finish that lasts for years.

Understanding the Purpose of Edging

The primary function of an edging stone is to act as a physical barrier. Without a defined edge, lawn mowers inevitably straddle the border, scalping your grass and creating a ragged transition. Furthermore, gravity causes mulch and soil to migrate; a vertical edge holds the material in place where it is needed. By installing edging stones, you reduce the weekly maintenance required to keep your beds looking sharp and eliminate the need for frequent trimming along the border.

Selecting the Right Stone and Material

The market offers a wide variety of edging stones, and choosing the correct one depends on your aesthetic goals and budget. Here are the most common options:

Material Best For
Bender Board Curved borders and cost-effectiveness
Brick or Pavers Formal, classic looks and heavy-duty needs
Natural Stone High-end aesthetics and organic landscape themes
Plastic/Metal Steep driveways and high-impact zones

For most residential applications, a stone thickness of at least 2.5 inches is recommended to withstand the pressure of soil and foot traffic without cracking.

Planning the Layout and Trench Preparation

Before placing a single stone, you must plan the layout. Use a garden hose or spray paint to mark your desired edge line. Aim for gentle curves rather than sharp angles, as this creates a more natural flow. Once the line is set, you need to dig a trench. The depth should be the height of the stone plus an additional inch for a compacted gravel base. For example, if you are using a 3-inch stone, you should dig a 4-inch deep trench to ensure the final edge sits level with your grass.

Installing the Base and Setting the Stones

A stable base is the difference between a lasting installation and a sunken mess. After digging the trench, remove any loose soil and lay a bed of crushed gravel about 1 to 1.5 inches thick. This granular base allows for excellent drainage and prevents the edging from shifting. Compact the gravel lightly with a tamper. Now, place the stones into the trench. For rigid stones like brick or pavers, ensure the top edge is perfectly level with the surrounding turf. For flexible bender board, you can gently bend it around corners, anchoring it with steel spikes every 2 to 3 feet.

Backfilling and Final Compaction

Once the stones are in place, backfill the trench behind them with the excavated soil. As you shovel, gently tamp the soil down to eliminate air pockets and lock the stone in place. It is crucial not to leave the void behind the stone empty; if it collapses, the edge will lose its integrity and the stone may bow or sink. For a cleaner look, you can also backfill with additional shredded bark or small gravel, ensuring the joint is filled to stabilize the structure.

Maintaining Your Edged Landscape

Installation is the first step; maintenance ensures the edge remains pristine. During the first season, check the edge monthly to ensure stones have not shifted due to soil settling. If you notice any wobbling, simply lift the stone and add more gravel or soil to firm it up. To prevent grass from invading the gap, you can spray the edge with a non-selective herbicide or insert a plastic lawn edging barrier behind the stone before backfilling. This proactive approach saves hours of weeding and trimming in the long run.
