John the Baptist took the ritual of baptism and applied it to those who saw their need for spiritual cleansing in preparation for the arrival of the Messiah. Many believed John's message and were baptized by him (Matthew 3:5-6). The baptisms John performed had the specific purpose of readying hearts for the coming of the Lord.

John is a prominent Advent figure because he was sent by God to prepare the way of the Lord, i.e., the Messiah. While baptizing people in the Jordan River, he pointed to Jesus as the "One who is to come" (Mt 11:3). Not only is he a "baptizer"; he is also a "witness." In turn, Jesus gives testimony to the precursor, pointing to John's "authority" to baptize.
