The graphed parameters show the percentage of all outputs that are available either through the publisher ("Total Gold") or through a repository ("Total Green"). An article can therefore be both "green" and "gold" and the sum does not provide the total level of open access for that institution. "Green" includes outputs for which an accessible version can be identified in any repository and therefore includes preprints, disciplinary repositories and institutional repositories. "Gold" includes all outputs for an accessible version can be identified at a publisher website with a reuse license (and therefore includes both "hybrid" and "pure gold". It does not include "bronze" which is all outputs for which a copy is identified at a publisher site but for which a reuse license cannot be identified. Publication year is derived from Crossref metadata, which generally corresponds to a publisher provided date for first online availability.
Data is obtained from Crossref metadata (basic bibliographic information), Unpaywall (open access status), Microsoft Academic (affiliations of outputs), and GRID (characteristics of affiliated institutions such as location and country. Analysis is limited to outputs that have a Crossref DOI as this is this is the subset for which Unpaywall provides information.
