PARAMETERS

The bars show four mutually exclusive catgories of accessible outputs, so these parameters are different to those shown in the scatter plots. Outputs with access through the publisher are prioritised. We use the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) to define the set of journals that are purely open access. Outputs that are accessible through venues that are not in DOAJ are categorised as "hybrid" where Unpaywall detects a license and "bronze" where Unpaywall does not detect a license.

Outputs for which the only accessible version identified is accessible via a repository are labelled as "green only". Note that this is substantially lower than the figures for "Total Green" which are shown elsewhere. "Green" includes outputs for which an accessible version can be identified in any repository and therefore includes preprints, disciplinary repositories and institutional repositories. Publication year is derived from Crossref metadata, which generally corresponds to a publisher provided date for first online availability.

DATA SOURCES

Data is obtained from Crossref metadata (basic bibliographic information), Unpaywall (open access status), Microsoft Academic (affiliations of outputs), and GRID (characteristics of affiliated institutions such as location and country. Analysis is limited to outputs that have a Crossref DOI as this is this is the subset for which Unpaywall provides information.
