Understanding 3-Way Switch Wiring with 3 Wires
When it comes to controlling lights from multiple locations, a 3-way switch setup is an efficient and practical solution. This guide will walk you through the process of wiring a 3-way switch with just three wires, ensuring your electrical system is safe, functional, and up to code.
What is a 3-Way Switch?
A 3-way switch allows you to control a single light fixture from two different locations. This is commonly used in hallways, staircases, and large rooms. The key components of a 3-way switch setup are the two switches and the traveler wires that connect them.
Materials Needed
- Two 3-way switches
- 14/3 non-metallic (NM) sheathed cable (or 12/3 for 20-amp circuits)
- 14/2 NM cable (or 12/2 for 20-amp circuits) for power supply
- Wire connectors (wire nuts)
- Electrical tape
- Wire stripper
- Fish tape (if fishing wires through walls)
Wiring a 3-Way Switch with 3 Wires
Step 1: Plan and Prepare
Before you start, turn off the power to the circuit at your main electrical panel. Use a non-contact voltage tester to ensure the power is off. Plan your wiring path, and gather all necessary materials.

Step 2: Run the Wires
Run the 14/3 NM cable from the power source to the first switch box, and continue it to the second switch box. Ensure the cable is long enough to reach both boxes. Also, run a 14/2 NM cable from the power source to the light fixture.
Step 3: Wire the First Switch Box
Strip about 8 inches of the outer jacket from the 14/3 cable and the 14/2 cable. Strip about 1 inch of insulation from the individual wires. Connect the black (hot) wire from the 14/2 cable to the common (black) terminal on the first 3-way switch using a wire nut. Wrap the connection with electrical tape.
Connect the two white (neutral) wires together using a wire nut. Connect the two ground (green or bare) wires together using a wire nut. Push the wires back into the box, ensuring no wires are pinched or strained.

Step 4: Wire the Second Switch Box
In the second switch box, connect the two black (traveler) wires from the 14/3 cable to the traveler terminals (brass-colored) on the second 3-way switch. Connect the white (neutral) wire from the 14/3 cable to the neutral terminal (silver-colored) on the switch. Connect the ground wires together using a wire nut.
Step 5: Wire the Light Fixture
At the light fixture, connect the black (hot) wire from the 14/2 cable to the black (hot) wire on the light fixture. Connect the white (neutral) wire to the white (neutral) wire on the fixture. Connect the ground wires together using a wire nut.
Step 6: Test the Circuit
Turn the power back on at the main electrical panel. Test the switches and the light fixture to ensure they are working correctly. If everything is functioning as expected, replace the switch and fixture covers.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
If the light doesn't work, double-check your connections and ensure the power is on. If the light works only from one switch, you may have the traveler wires connected to the wrong terminals. If the light flickers, there may be a loose connection or a short circuit.
Always remember that electrical work should be done by a licensed professional if you're not comfortable doing it yourself. Safety should always be your top priority when working with electricity.
