Wiring a Lutron Dimmer: A Comprehensive Guide
Installing a Lutron dimmer switch can transform your lighting, offering smooth dimming, energy efficiency, and added convenience. This guide walks you through the process, from understanding your wiring to connecting the dimmer safely and effectively.
Understanding Your Wiring
Before you start, ensure you have the right Lutron dimmer for your wiring type. Lutron offers dimmers for single-pole, 3-way, and multi-location setups. For this guide, we'll focus on single-pole wiring, which is the most common.
- Single-pole wiring has two wires: black (hot) and white (neutral).
- The green or bare copper wire is the ground.
Safety First: Turn Off Power
Always ensure the power is off before working on electrical wiring. Turn off the circuit breaker, then use a non-contact voltage tester to confirm the wires are dead.

Removing the Old Switch
Remove the cover plate and unscrew the old switch. Gently pull the switch out, and you'll see the wires connected to it. Take a photo of the wiring for reference, then disconnect the wires from the switch.
Preparing the Lutron Dimmer
Open the Lutron dimmer's packaging and remove the contents. You'll have the dimmer switch, a wall plate, mounting screws, and sometimes, a decorator plate.
If your Lutron dimmer is a smart model, you'll also need to download the Lutron app and connect the dimmer to your Wi-Fi network before installation.

Wiring the Lutron Dimmer
Connect the wires to the Lutron dimmer as follows:
| Lutron Dimmer Terminal | Wire Color |
|---|---|
| Black (Line) | Black (Hot) |
| White (Load) | White (Neutral) |
| Green or Bare Copper (Ground) | Green or Bare Copper (Ground) |
Tighten the screws gently but firmly to secure the wires. Ensure no wires are touching each other or the metal box.
Mounting the Lutron Dimmer
With the wires connected, push the dimmer into the electrical box. Secure it with the provided screws, then attach the wall plate.
If you're using a decorator plate, attach it now. If your dimmer is a smart model, use the Lutron app to control your lights.
Testing the Lutron Dimmer
Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker. Flip the dimmer switch to test the lights. They should dim smoothly as you turn the switch.
Congratulations! You've successfully wired a Lutron dimmer. Enjoy your new lighting control.
