Wiring the 3-Way Switches
Step 1: Identify the Wires
The 14/3 cable has three wires: black (hot), white (neutral), and red (traveler). The 14/2 cable has two: black (hot) and white (neutral). The black wire in the 14/3 cable will be connected to the power source, while the white wire will be connected to the neutral wire at the light fixture.
Step 2: First Switch
Connect the black (hot) wire from the 14/3 cable to the common terminal (usually marked "COM") on the first 3-way switch. Connect the white (neutral) wire to the neutral wire from the 14/2 cable. The red (traveler) wire from the 14/3 cable goes to one of the traveler terminals (usually marked "T1" or "T"). The other traveler terminal (T2) will be connected to the traveler wire from the second 3-way switch.
Step 3: Second Switch
At the second 3-way switch, connect the black (hot) wire from the 14/2 cable to the common terminal (COM). Connect the white (neutral) wire to the neutral wire from the light fixture. The red (traveler) wire from the 14/3 cable at the first switch connects to one of the traveler terminals (T1 or T2). The other traveler terminal (T2 or T1) will be connected to the traveler wire from the first 3-way switch.
Step 4: Light Fixture
Connect the black (hot) wire from the 14/2 cable to the black wire from the light fixture. Connect the white (neutral) wire from the 14/2 cable to the white wire from the light fixture.
Testing Your Work
Once everything is connected, turn the power back on at your main electrical panel. Test your 3-way light switch by toggling both switches on and off. The light should turn on and off from both locations.
