With iDrive, the envelope appears in the control display on receipt of a BMW Assist message (as in your case) or an email or text message on a paired phone. Your Bluetooth module has unread text messages stored on it. I bought a BT module on German eBay for my E39 about ten years ago.

It came with about 150 text messages, in German. It's too much of a pain to read them all, so the little envelope shows up every time my phone is connected. My messages do show only on the top right screen but there's no notification as to a popup on the screen. Do you have an example screenshot of how a text message pops up on the iDrive screen? All you get is the envelope icon in the top right of the navigation screen, no special popup notification. I recently purchased a 2006 750i and an envelope icon popped up on the I-Drive screen in the upper left-hand corner.
