The Great Plague of London struck the English capital in 1665–1666 and became one of Britain's last major outbreaks of bubonic plague. Caused by Yersinia pestis, the epidemic spread through densely populated neighborhoods during the warmer months of 1665. Official Bills of Mortality recorded more than 68,000 plague deaths, while the true toll was probably higher in a city of about half a million people. Authorities closed infected houses, restricted gatherings, killed animals believed to spread disease, and marked homes where illness appeared. Wealthier residents, including the royal court, often fled London, while poorer residents had fewer options. The outbreak declined during the winter, leaving a powerful record of fear, inequality, quarantine, and urban disease control.
