It was available with a range of inline-6 and V8 engines that displaced 3.2 to 4.8 liters. At launch, the E39 B10 came with modified BMW M52 I6 and M62 V8 engines, essentially basing the car on BMW's 530i and 540i respectively. The Alpina B10 V8 was the first Alpina to be based on the E-39 generation BMW 5-Series or more specifically the 540i.
