Bmw E34 Vs E39

I need your opinions fellows BMW enthusiast. My 01 E39 M5 finally arrived today so I thought I would write a brief comparasion. First off the E34 has Dinan chip, Dinan stage 3 suspension (Bilstein all around) and Supersprint Exhaust.

The E39 has Dinan software, strut braces front and rear, UUC clutch +light weight flywheel, Tubi exhaust. I drive an e39 as a daily and cannot add a word about the e34. However the e39 is a great cruiser.

I hear that the steering improvement from the e34 are notable but honestly the car is so heavy I doubt it tips the scales. The m54 is stretched to it's absolute maximum with this car, IMO but it's very reliable and all around a decent car. I'd test drive both.

The e34 will be loads more luxury and refinement while still feeling "tight" on the road. The e39 will just be a flat out lux car in comparison to an e30, but may feel a bit heavy and "boaty" if you like the handling and feel of the e30. the main differences between the two is that the e34 lacks refinement and modern looks in the interior,etc.

The e39 would be a better choice if you plan on going stock but dare you try to mod or swap it, it'll become a nightmare. E34 gave me the exact feeling of a larger e30.

the e39 gave me the feeling of a modern classic. E34 is much more raw feeling, e39 is a bit more isolated, but ridiculously fast. I bought my e39 m5 in 2003, drove it daily until 2008, bought cpo with 32k on the clock, sold it with about 110k.

I think as our E34's start aging many of us will be faced with the question "if" or "when" we should make the jump to E39. I hadn't expected to be faced with this question quite so soon. BMW marketed the E39 as a sporty sedan, while the E34 was marketed as an old man's luxury sedan, and the handling definitely reflects the change. I also think the E39 has a much nicer interior design, and the E39 also seems to have better build quality, especially on the interior. At this age, reliability will probably be the same for both cars.
