The "7.5" factor represents the number of gallons in one cubic foot of water. To find the average depth for a pool with a shallow end and a deep end, simply add the two depths together and divide by two.
Example Calculation
Imagine a pool that is 20 feet long, 10 feet wide, has a shallow end of 3 feet, and a deep end of 6 feet. The average depth is (3 + 6) divided by 2, which equals 4.5 feet.
Plugging this into the formula: 20 (L) × 10 (W) × 4.5 (Avg Depth) × 7.5 results in a total of 6,750 gallons.

Calculating for Circular Pools
If your pool is round, the geometry changes slightly, but the principle remains the same. You will use the radius (half the diameter) squared and multiply by pi before applying the depth and the conversion factor.
For a circular pool, the formula is:

Irregularly Shaped Pools
Not all pools adhere to perfect geometric shapes. Kidney shapes, figure-eights, and freeform designs require a different approach. The best method for these pools is to calculate them as if they were a combination of two or more basic shapes.
Break the complex shape into rectangles, circles, or ovals, calculate the volume for each section individually, and then add the results together to get the total gallons in pool.
Approximation Method
For a quick estimate on a freeform pool, you can treat it as an average of the minimum and maximum dimensions. Measure the longest width, the shortest width, and the average depth. Use the average width in the rectangular formula to get a rough gallonage figure, though this is less precise than the segment method.
