Calculate Gallons in Pool: Easy Formula & Free Calculator

To effectively manage water chemistry, sanitation, and heating, you must first know the volume of water you are handling. The calculation to determine how many gallons are in your pool is the foundation for dosing chemicals, planning heating needs, and estimating fill or drain times accurately.

Basic Formula for Rectangular Pools

The most common shape for inground pools is a rectangle or square, making the calculation straightforward. The standard formula multiplies the length by the width by the average depth by a specific multiplier to convert cubic feet to gallons.

For a rectangular pool, the formula is:

  • Length (in feet) × Width (in feet) × Average Depth (in feet) × 7.5 = Gallons

The "7.5" factor represents the number of gallons in one cubic foot of water. To find the average depth for a pool with a shallow end and a deep end, simply add the two depths together and divide by two.

Example Calculation

Imagine a pool that is 20 feet long, 10 feet wide, has a shallow end of 3 feet, and a deep end of 6 feet. The average depth is (3 + 6) divided by 2, which equals 4.5 feet.

Plugging this into the formula: 20 (L) × 10 (W) × 4.5 (Avg Depth) × 7.5 results in a total of 6,750 gallons.

Calculating for Circular Pools

If your pool is round, the geometry changes slightly, but the principle remains the same. You will use the radius (half the diameter) squared and multiply by pi before applying the depth and the conversion factor.

For a circular pool, the formula is:

  • Radius (in feet) × Radius (in feet) × 3.14 × Average Depth (in feet) × 7.5 = Gallons

Simply measure the diameter of the pool, divide by two to get the radius, and then apply the formula to determine the total volume.

Example Calculation

Consider a circular pool with a diameter of 12 feet, giving a radius of 6 feet, and an average depth of 4 feet. The calculation would be: 6 × 6 × 3.14 × 4 × 7.5. This results in approximately 33,912 gallons of water.

Irregularly Shaped Pools

Not all pools adhere to perfect geometric shapes. Kidney shapes, figure-eights, and freeform designs require a different approach. The best method for these pools is to calculate them as if they were a combination of two or more basic shapes.

Break the complex shape into rectangles, circles, or ovals, calculate the volume for each section individually, and then add the results together to get the total gallons in pool.

Approximation Method

For a quick estimate on a freeform pool, you can treat it as an average of the minimum and maximum dimensions. Measure the longest width, the shortest width, and the average depth. Use the average width in the rectangular formula to get a rough gallonage figure, though this is less precise than the segment method.

Why Accurate Measurement Matters

Knowing the exact volume of water is critical for health and safety. Adding the correct amount of chlorine, pH balancers, and algaecide depends on the total water capacity. Under-dosing leaves the water vulnerable to bacteria, while over-dosing can cause skin irritation and damage to pool equipment.

Additionally, if you are installing a heater or a saltwater generator, the system selection is entirely based on the gallons per hour turnover rate specific to your pool size.
