Apple began soldering RAM directly to the logic board with the introduction of the Retina 5K iMac, making the memory permanent and impossible to replace. Generally, iImac models from 2014 and later featuring a Retina display are soldered and non-upgradable. Conversely, most 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMacs released between 2012 and 2014, as well as the non-Retina 27-inch models, use DIMM (Dual Inline Memory Module) slots and are user-serviceable. Gathering Tools and Compatibility
If your iMac supports an upgrade, you will need the right tools and components. You do not need a full toolkit, but you should prepare a few specific items.
