At its core, ignition timing refers to the synchronization of the spark plug firing event with the position of the crankshaft. Manufacturers specify an exact angle before or after Top Dead Center (TDC) to optimize combustion efficiency. Advancing the timing moves the spark earlier, causing the combustion pressure to peak sooner, which can increase power but risks knocking. Retarding the timing moves it later, which protects the engine from damage at the cost of performance and fuel economy. The goal of setting timing is to find the "sweet spot" specified in the service manual for your specific application.
Understanding the Two Timing Concepts
Before reaching for the wrench, it is essential to distinguish between ignition timing and valve timing. While ignition timing deals with the spark, valve timing governs the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves. Incorrect valve timing can cause catastrophic engine failure, whereas incorrect ignition timing usually results in poor performance or damage over time. Both require precision, but they are adjusted using different components. Ignition timing is adjusted via the distributor or ECU, while valve timing involves the camshaft and its relationship to the crankshaft.

Gathering Tools and Preparation

It is also wise to have a notebook and pen to record initial readings and adjustments. The battery should remain connected during the procedure to ensure the ECU or vacuum advance mechanisms receive proper power.
The Static Timing Method
The static method establishes the initial position of the first cylinder. This involves physically positioning the piston at Top Dead Center on the compression stroke. To do this, you typically remove the spark plug from the number one cylinder, insert a tool into the hole, and rotate the engine until the piston touches the tool. At that point, the timing marks on the harmonic balancer and the timing cover should align. If they do not, the crankshaft must be loosened and repositioned. This step locks the engine in the correct mechanical position before the ignition system is adjusted.
The Dynamic Timing Procedure
With static timing confirmed, the dynamic phase begins. You connect the timing light to the number one spark plug wire and the engine's battery terminals. As the engine runs, the light flashes, casting a shadow on the timing scale. The objective is to adjust the ignition advance mechanism—usually the distributor—until the shadow aligns with the specified timing mark, such as 12 degrees BTDC (Before Top Dead Center). The engine should be in its normal operating temperature, and the throttle should be held open if vacuum advance is disabled to simulate a wide-open throttle condition.

Modern Engine Management
For vehicles manufactured in the last few decades, the process shifts from mechanical adjustment to diagnostic verification. Modern engines use crankshaft and camshaft position sensors, and the timing is controlled by the Engine Control Unit (ECU). Setting timing on these platforms often involves checking the Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) alignment relative to the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP). A diagnostic scan tool allows the technician to view live data streams, observing the actual timing in milliseconds or degrees. Adjustments here are rarely about turning a nut; they are about verifying sensor integrity and ensuring the ECU is commanding the correct ignition advance.
Fine-Tuning and Validation
Once the timing is set, the real test is the road. The engine should idle smoothly without hesitation, and the RPM should remain steady.
