In Factorio’s complex rail network, train colors are far more than aesthetic choices—they’re essential for managing cargo flow, route efficiency, and system automation.

Train colors in Factorio serve as a visual language for logistics, helping players instantly identify train types, cargo restrictions, and route priorities. Each color corresponds to specific functions: green trains handle dry goods, red trains manage liquid cargo, and blue trains transport ore, reducing confusion during high-pressure operations. Proper color selection streamlines rail traffic, minimizes bottlenecks, and enhances overall gameplay performance.

Strategically assigning colors based on cargo type and line purpose maximizes rail efficiency. For instance, dedicating green trains to dry goods on high-volume routes ensures fast, uninterrupted movement, while red trains can prioritize liquid transport across longer distances. Using consistent color coding across rail junctions and stations improves route recognition and reduces errors, especially in large-scale factory setups. This logical alignment boosts both in-game productivity and player satisfaction.

To leverage train colors effectively, synchronize them with route design, cargo handling, and automation. Integrate color-coded signals and priority rules in control centers to direct trains automatically. Pair distinct colors with dedicated rail lines to prevent mix-ups and streamline sorting. Regularly audit color assignments as factory layouts evolve, ensuring long-term scalability. Mastering train colors transforms rail logistics from chaotic to controlled, making Factorio’s rail systems both functional and efficient.

I finally took the time to update my spreadsheet with updated RGB color codes for Factorio 2.0, so feel free to use them if you wish. Not perfect, but it works when trains need to change colors. Item colors are based on their icons, while fluid colors are based on their appearance in pipes, storage tanks, and barrels.

If a train's inventory contains multiple entities, their colors will be blended proportionally to the quantity† of each entity present. Thanks to Xterminator for the Mod Spotlight video! Compatibility I am open to submission of new or better colors.

I'd like to make a UI to let players set colors for their own games, but I don't have time. Changelog (Formerly called Train Ore Colors) 1.2: Update for Factorio 1.1, support for fluid wagons/artillery/manual trains, support Krastorio 2, support coloring train stops and inbound trains. Colors all train wagons, not only locomotives, based on the destination train stop.

Works with cybersyn. The wiki cheatsheet has a list of suggested train colors for their cargo. I usually just play with the sliders until I get a color I like and paint all the trains carrying that thing that color.

There was a mod that colored trains automatically based on their cargo a few versions ago. I *really* like color-coordinating my trains. So here's a station and train color index for common resources!

Color the whole train by the destination train stop color, not just the locomotives! This mod colors all the train carriages with the color of the stop this train is currently going to. This behaves the same way as the 'Use destination train stop color' setting in locomotives, but colors the whole. Makes train colors more vibrant and saturated.

If a train is carrying more than one type of resource the color will blend appropriately (e.g. iron is blue, copper is red- carrying 50% iron and 50% copper will make the train purple) What other mods does this support? Bob's ores (+ plates) Angel's ores (+ plates) Dark Matter Replicator This does not currently support any fluid barrels. Until now.

With Train Color Signal, once you set your circuit-connected station to "Show stopped train" the station will output the color of the first locomotive in your stopped train as R, G, and B signals, in addition to the normal output of the train's ID as the T signal.
