The White Snakeroot has ten to thirty small fuzzy flower heads in somewhat flattened clusters at the top of the plant.  These composite flower heads have disk florets but no ray florets.  The flowers are a brilliant white color. Each is only about 1/8 -inches wide and ¼ inch tall.  The seeds are distributed by the wind, assisted by fluffy white tails.   The toothed leaves are heart-shaped on slender petioles and are 2-7 inches long.  Unlike its relatives, this is a common woodland plant that is most noticed when it grows on the edges of forested land or in partially shaded thickets.  It will tolerate mildly degraded and disturbed soils.  The stem is usually smooth.  The plant is fairly small—growing only 1-3 feet high. White Snakeroot is found in much of central and eastern North America and blooms from July to October.  It is documented in every county in Pennsylvania.    The plant is toxic to cows and other livestock because it contains Tremetol.  Humans who drink milk or eat the meat from contaminated cows may also get Milk Sickness, a disease that can be fatal.  It is believed that the mother of Abraham Lincoln and thousands of others died from this condition in the early 1800s.  Dr. Anna Pierce Hobbs discovered the toxic nature of the plants in the 1830s, perhaps with the assistance of a Shawnee woman. Previously an extract from the root of the plant was used in a vain attempt to cure snakebite and treat other ailments—giving the plant its common name.    A commercial variety used in gardens has dark brown leaves and is called “Chocolate.” The form of the flower cluster resembles that of Boneset and Late-Flowering Thoroughwort, but the leaves are distinctly wider and the habitat different.
